Abstract
Bacterial vaginosis is a risk factor for poor pregnancy outcome. There is an increased risk for premature rupture of the membranes (PROM), preterm birth, low birth weight, chorioamnionitis, and postcesarean and postpartum endometritis. Screening for bacterial vaginosis is technically possible by using clinical criteria and laboratory testing with the Gram stain as the gold standard. So far, there is no evidence that screening and treating bacterial vaginosis in low risk women exerts a positive influence on pregnancy outcome.
