Evaluating neurology residents’ communication and interpersonal skills through multisource feedback in a tertiary care setting: A cross-sectional study

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the reliability of Multisource feedback (MSF) in assessing communication and interpersonal skills among neurology residents. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted at two major neurology departments in Islamabad over eight months. Nineteen residents were assessed by ten evaluators each, including faculty, peers, nurses, unit receptionists, neurophysiology technologists, patients, and self-assessments. A total of 209 evaluations were analyzed using SPSS 20. Cronbach’s alpha measured internal consistency; ANOVA was used to comp-are mean scores among rater types. A p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The MSF tool demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.90). Most residents received above-average scores. Faculty rated residents highest (mean=5.98), followed by technologists (5.65), nurses (5.34), and peers (5.31); receptionists gave the lowest scores. No statistically significant differences were observed in overall scores by gender (p=0.59) or hospital type (p>0.05). Peers gave the lowest scores in interpersonal behavior items. Conclusion: MSF is a reliable and feasible tool for evaluating communication and interpersonal skills among neurology residents. Incorporating feedback from diverse stakeholders provides a holistic view. Future research should explore the longitudinal use of MSF and its impact on professional development.
