Abstract

This chapter explores the issue of food security, tracing its origins to the 1970s and its prominence as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 2), aiming for “Zero Hunger” by 2030. Despite global efforts, alarming statistics from the World Food Program reveal that 45% of the global population grapples with food insecurity, affecting 828 million people in 2021. This increase is exacerbated by climate change, economic inflation, conflicts, and resource constraints, with the gender gap in food insecurity widening and the COVID-19 pandemic intensifying global food insecurity, impacting 811 million individuals. This chapter examines the dynamics of food security, highlighting agriculture’s profound influence on production, access through income and market dynamics, quality, safety, and stability via resilient agricultural systems. It scrutinizes challenges such as population growth, social-political factors, urban development, crop choices, land degradation, water scarcity, and the impacts of events like the COVID-19 pandemic and regional conflicts. Central to overcoming these challenges is exploring innovative solutions, including technological advancements, sustainable farming practices, and community-led initiatives, acknowledging the transformative potential of social and political changes. This chapter offers valuable insights into the evolving landscape of global food security and understanding essential components and strategies in achieving SDG 2.
