Abstract

This chapter explores the specialized field of forensic mental health nursing, examining its evolution, theoretical foundations, and practical applications within Kenya’s healthcare and justice systems. Forensic mental health nursing represents a critical intersection between psychiatric care and legal processes, addressing the unique needs of individuals involved in the criminal justice system—both as perpetrators and survivors of crime. The chapter provides comprehensive coverage of evidence collection and preservation, therapeutic interventions, and the multidisciplinary collaboration required for effective forensic psychiatric care. Special emphasis is placed on the Kenyan context, including the Mental Health Act (Cap 248), the role of Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital, and the growing need for specialized training in this field. Through exploration of theories of crime, ethical principles, and evidence-based interventions including music therapy, this chapter equips nurses with essential knowledge for delivering competent, compassionate, and legally sound care to forensic psychiatric populations.
