Abstract

Intellectual property laws and regulations provide incentives for the production and distribution of new knowledge by establishing a mechanism for the creator of that knowledge to obtain compensation for the use of protected works. Patents are the most prevalent form of intellectual property right (IPR) sought for biotechnological innovation. This article provides an overview of intellectual property rights available for biotechnological innovation and regulations governing those rights.
