Abstract

Salmonella typhi resistant to chloramphenicol, ampicillin and trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole are simultaneously increasing in number worldwide. We isolated 290 Multiple drug resistant (MDR) S. typhi with high range of Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs). These isolates were sensitive to cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, zetreonam and ofloxacin with a narrow range of MICs. Tansconjugants E. coli showed same antibiogram and MICs as donor cells. All MDR S. typhi isolates and transconjugants contained a single plasmid pBN1 of 20kb. Purified plasmid of MDR S. typhi and transconjugants when treated with restriction endonuclease enzyme EcoR1 revealed no restriction site for EcoR1.
