Protein Requirements and Quality in Infancy and Early Childhood

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

The protein requirements during infancy and early childhood differ from those during adulthood. Children require additional protein to support growth. Calculations of protein requirements in infants and children are based on nitrogen balance studies, protein deposition, and the efficiency of protein digestion. The first six months of life involve the highest growth velocity, requiring more protein per kg of body weight than other age groups. This chapter discusses the methods for calculating protein requirements for infants and children, as well as their strengths and limitations. We also examine the quality of protein required in early childhood.
