Abstract
Objectives: To study the role of nutritional and immunization status on morbidity and mortality in children. To study the role of duration of illness and medical care on mortality in children. Study design: A descriptive cross- sectional study. Subjects and methods: This study was conducted from June 2003 to Dec 2006 at the department of Paediatrics Unit II, Dow University of Health Sciences and Civil Hospital Karachi. Patients admitted via OPD and Emergency and expired during their hospital stay were included in the study. A predesigned proforma was completed by the medical officer on call and later evaluated by the principal investigator. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 15 software. Results: 162 deaths were included in the study. Males were comparatively more than the females; those above 6 months, were, affected more, 65 % presented during the first week of illness. 32% cases were of sepsis followed by ARI 25.30 %. Only 28 % had up to date vaccinations and 55 % were severely malnourished. Conclusion: Morbidity and mortality was high in children who were unvaccinated and severely malnourished. Deaths were more likely during acute illness.
